MALPENSA – Malpensa airport confirms once more its spot in the world’s top 100 airports according to the Skytrax World Airport Awards, which ranks the best airports in the world on the basis of the passengers’ satisfaction. Malpensa fell from number 78 in 2021 to number 83 this year and it first appeared in the ranking in 2020, at number 99.

The ranking

This is a ranking that Skytrax has been releasing since 1999 on the basis of customer satisfaction surveys conducted on over 500 airports worldwide. The ranking has become a point of reference for the global airport industry.

The survey is meant to cover both qualitative and quantitative analysis. Some of the aspects considered are the layout of the terminal, comfort, seating areas, Wi-Fi, the dining area, retail stores, the quality of services and of the staff.

The Italians at the bottom

The first Italian airport in the worldwide ranking is Fiumicino, Rome, which unlike Malpensa does not fall down in the ranking, but rather cracks the top 30 list, gradually passing from number 58 in 2020 to 36 in 2021, up to the current number 24. It is hoped that the airport in Rome will grow further and enter the Top 20, as in May 2022 the new boarding area of Terminal 1 was inaugurated by the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella.

The ranking is still dominated by Asian airports, which take the top five positions (Hamad, Tokyo Haneda, Singapore, Narita and Incheon). Immediately after that, Paris, Munich, Istanbul, Zurich and Kansai.

However, Malpensa still scores higher than some of the most prestigious airports in the world, such as Jfk in New York (number 85), Abu Dhabi airport (number 88) and Willy Brandt in Berlin (number 92).
