MiTo 2022, classical music at the Dal Verme, Studio and Officina theatres

This weekend classical music will be at the centre of three concerts in Dal Verme, Studio and Officina theatres in Milan. This is part of the international festival  MiTo 2022 SettembreMusica. We begin with the show ‘Pastel Light’ at the Piccolo Teatro Studio Melato, at 5 pm, with David Orlowsky on clarinet and David Bergmüller on lute. The music is by Henry Purcell, Johannes Hieronymus Kapsberger, David Orlowsky and David Bergmüller. At 9 pm, at Dal Verme theatre, ‘British Lights’ will be played for the orchestra of I Pomeriggi Musicali with James Feddeck, conductor and repertoire of James MacMillan, Franz Joseph Haydn and Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy. At the Teatro Officina, again at 9 pm, ‘Schubert’s piano’ is presented with Filippo Gorini at the piano and music, of course, by Franz Schubert.

The mysterious singer and songwriter Liberato in San Siro

The two main characteristics of the mysterious singer and songwriter are his anonymity and the language of composition of his texts in Neapolitan, usually juxtaposed to words or entire sentences in Italian, English, French and Spanish. His name is Liberato and he is also called the faceless artist.

All we know is that he’s a songwriter from Neaples. In San Siro he will perform his most beautiful songs, from “Tu t’e scurdat’ ‘e me” to “Partenope”, in which he mixes the ancient beauty of the neomelodic with super modern sounds. Since the beginning of his career, Liberato has chosen to remain completely anonymous, keeping his private life under the strictest confidentiality. The mystery around his true identity is a distinctive feature of his figure: he appears in public exclusively hooded, accompanied by a look-alike or concealed by a screen.

Saturday September 10

Lino Guanciale in “Fuggi la terra e l’onde” at the House of Charity

Immigration, diversity, encounter, solidarity, recognizing one another, humanity. These seem to be the implicit and explicit themes of “Fuggi la terra e l’onde” the recital written, directed and interpreted by Lino Guanciale as part of the review “Sguardi (d’) insieme”, organised by the Piccolo Teatro in some metropolitan municipalities in Milan. A collection of songs by authors like Joseph Conrad to anonymous Arab chroniclers, from voices of contemporary migrants to the Aeneid virgilian – who told the challenge of man to the sea, as a drunkenness of discovery, but also fear of nature and the unknown, symbol of life and adventure and at the same time of danger and death. Because, as Conrad himself wrote, “The sea has never been a man’s friend”. The show is free, but subject to availability, and it is mandatory to reserve a seat.

“Jova Beach Party” ends at Bresso airport, among much criticism

In August many environmentalists have criticised “Jova Beach Party” shows for the damages they caused on the Italian beaches. As a result, the last of the 21 shows of the tour by Lorenzo Jovanotti, will take place at the airport of Bresso (a hundred thousand people have already registered in Linate, now closed for work), just outside Milan. The aim is for the show to be a big, long party, to either give the feeling of still being on holiday, or to end it lightheartedly. A sort of collective ritual, partly a concert, partly a party and a festival. Tickets range from 65 to 345 euros. Very high prices in a period of extreme crisis. Jovanotti called “econazisti those dangerous mythomaniacs who violently polarise the great question of ecology”. It would also be interesting to know his opinion on this issue.

Sunday September 11 at the Forum

The virtuous violinist, David Garrett, at the Assago Forum

Beautiful and also a bit damned, the German-born American violinist and composer David Garrett, born in Aachen in 1980, makes a stop at the Forum. He has been recognized as a virtuous player, able to juggle classical and pop music. He will perform pieces from his latest album “Alive-My Soundtrack”, from “Beauty and the Beast” to “Stayin’ Alive”. Garrett has also been much appreciated as a musician by two sacred monsters such as Zubin Mehta and Daniel Barenboim. He will play a Stradivarius and a Vuillaume violin (he also has a Holy Seraphim and a Guarneri of Jesus). He has made himself known to critics for his repertoire of rock music adapted to orchestra and, in particular, to the violin. In his cover songs, this instrument tends to replace the guitars of the artists like Brian May, Angus Young, Slash, Kirk Hammett, Jimmy Page or Kurt Cobain, but also the voices, for example, of Axl Rose or Michael Jackson.
