Traffic and queues in  Malpensa: travellers hit by chaos at Terminal 1

*Translated by Sara Pasino

MALPENSA Cars stuck in the queue and the usual people who try to avoid the 10-minute area by parking just outside of the access ramp to Terminal 1 in order to pick up friends and relatives. On August 25 travellers in Malpensa were hit by chaos. And it wasn’t the first time.

The recovery of Malpensa

Air and passenger traffic in Malpensa has not come back to pre-Covid levels yet. This is supported the latest statistics published by Assaeroporti. Malpensa is second only to the Roman airport of Fiumicino. But it is also true that the airport in Varese is recovering faster after the collapse caused by the pandemic. And now, the traffic jams that have blocked the access to Terminal 1 (photo from the Vola Malpensa page) suggest that the trend is growing towards 2019 numbers. Inconvenience aside, of course.

Queues at terminal 1

The queues on August 25 were mainly at the entrance to Terminal 1, in particular with cars moving at a walking pace both to reach arrivals and departures. But also to the ramps that connect the motorway to the airport were affected.  In short, every side of Malpensa was flooded by cars. This has been happening for the past few weeks, also during the day.

Some look for alternative solutions

Not to mention the well-known problem of those who illegally park outside of the 10-minute area, waiting to pick up friends and family landing in Malpensa. This time this inconvenience has been exacerbated by the high number of cars driving towards the airport. Recently, the Prefect Salvatore Pasquariello, has been looking at this problem. In June he organised a meeting for an enlarged memorandum of understanding that aims to strengthen the presence of law enforcement and restore the situation to normal.
